Uthappa, Chand set up win for India 'A'

VISAKHAPATNAM: India 'A' rode the aggression of Robin Uthappa (103, 8x4, 5x6) and skipper Unmukt Chand (94, 9x4, 6x6) to register a six-wicket win over New Zealand 'A' with 5.5 overs to spare in their first one-dayer at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing 258 for victory, the India 'A' openers ensured that their 178-run first wicket stand in 30 overs made it a no contest. The Chand-Uthappa pair did not take long to put the opposition bowlers to the sword. Uthappa was at his dominating best, and received good support from Chand who essayed a wide range of shots. Uthappa was the first to cross the half-century mark off 62 balls, while Chand got to his 50 in 54 deliveries.

The pair raised the 100-run mark in 19.2 overs. While Chand fell short of a much-deserved ton, Uthappa made sure that he got to the three-figure mark. The only blemish in Uthappa's knock came when he was dropped on 93 by Matt Henry off Adam Milne. The Kiwi attack, without the experienced duo of Douglas Bracewell and Mark Gillespie (both rested), failed to trouble the hosts.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who has been named in the Kiwi Test squad for the Bangladesh tour, was taken apart by Chand the moment he came on to bowl.

Post the departure of Chand and Uthappa, the hosts had a minor scare when Mandeep Singh (1) and Ashok Menaria (0) were dismissed cheaply, but Aditya Tare (37 no) and Kedhar Jadhav (15 no) helped the hosts cross the finish line.

Earlier, the Kiwis ended at 257, thanks to handy contributions by Daryl Mitchell (51, 3x4, 2x6), Anton Devcich (48, 7x4) and Carl Cachopa (45, 3x4, 2x6).

The hosts kept taking wickets at regular intervals that kept the Kiwis in check. Luke Ronchi (13) was the first to depart, caught by Uthappa in the first slip off Shrikant Wagh to leave the visitors at 36 for 1 after 9 overs. But, the Devcich-Cachopa pair added 51 runs in the 8.3 overs to give the Kiwis' innings some momentum.
