Clarification of DODDS Korea policy regarding travel to non-DODDS sports events

Published: September 17, 2013

To clarify DODDS Korea's policies regarding team travel to non-DODDS-sponsored athletic events during the regular season:

An e-mail received Tuesday from a member of Daegu High's volleyball coaching staff says that DODDS Korea has a uniform policy for all schools and all teams designed to:

1) mitigate lost instructional time for students,
2) create a policy that is uniform and across the board for all activities affected, and
3) eliminate coordination with teachers of affected students absent due to the event.

Any instructional day lost due to such participation goes as an unexcused absence, the e-mail further stated.

From my view, that means DODDS Korea isn't in the business of approving or disapproving travel to such events; the policy just outlines the consequences of such travel.

So each team has to determine whether it's worth those consequences to participate in events such as the Columbus Day weekend Okinawa District Volleyball Festival, the Rumble on the Rock and Beast of the Far East wrestling tournaments in January and others.
