Quake In Central Pakistan Makes New Island

A large earthquake shook a remote part of central Pakistan Tuesday, and so far local authorities have only reported a few dozen fatalities so far. But according to estimates by the U.S. Geological Survey, the death toll could be far higher. The quake also gave rise to a mysterious island off the coast of Pakistan. The island was likely created by frozen methane that was shaken loose by the shaking. It pushed its way to the surface and created a muddy piece of land that will soon be washed away.

Kenyan forces defusing explosives in mall

NAIROBI (AFP) - Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants, claiming they were still holding hostages, on Tuesday battled Kenyan troops for the fourth day of a bloody siege at a Nairobi mall and threatened further attacks against the country.

Sporadic gunfire and a series of explosions at the upmarket Westgate shopping centre rang out throughout the day, despite officials earlier claiming Kenyan troops had wrested back "control" of the sprawling complex from Somalia's Shebab insurgents, who are said to include Americans and a British woman.

At least 65 shoppers, staff and soldiers have been killed and close to 200 wounded in the siege, but concerns are high that the toll may rise, with the Shebab boasting about "countless number of dead bodies still scattered inside the mall".

The fate of 63 people listed as missing is unknown.

"The hostages who were being held by the mujahedeen inside Westgate are still alive, looking quite disconcerted but, nevertheless, alive," the Shebab said on Twitter.

But Kenyan officials have said all the hostages are believed to have been freed, with the interior ministry saying Tuesday the assault was "very near the end".

Shebab spokesman Ali Mohamud Rage has said the carnage was in retaliation for Nairobi's two-year battle against the extremists' bases in southern Somalia.

On Tuesday, he threatened further attacks if Kenya did not pull its troops out of Somalia, warning the siege was just "a taste of what we will do... you should expect black days".

Meanwhile, explosive experts were defusing devices set up by the militants in the mall, police said, adding another dangerous element to the siege, which has now dragged on for 75 hours.

Part of the building's rooftop parking also collapsed Tuesday, security sources said, following a fierce fire the day before.

Shebab fighters stormed the crowded mall midday on Saturday, tossing grenades, firing automatic weapons and sending panicked shoppers fleeing.

Kenyan Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed said among the fighters were several American nationals and a British woman, which media reports have speculated could be a Muslim convert known as the "White Widow".

Government spokesman Manoah Esipisu told AFP that special forces were now "sanitising" the complex in case "there are a couple of them hiding in a remote room or corner".

"We think that everyone, the hostages, have been evacuated," Esipisu said.

Special forces on Monday killed at least three gunmen and wounded several in bitter fighting in the part Israeli-owned complex, popular with wealthy Kenyans and expatriates.

Three Kenyan soldiers on Tuesday died from injuries sustained in those gun battles, the army said. Eight others remain in hospital.

Kenyan army chief Julius Karangi said the attackers were from "different countries". Many foreign fighters, including Somalis with dual nationalities, are members of the Shebab force.

In an interview with US public broadcaster PBS, Kenya's foreign minister said young American men and a British woman were among the attackers.

"She has, I think, done this many times before," Mohamed said of the Briton, contradicting other officials who previously said all attackers were men.

Britain's Home Secretary Theresa May said she was aware of the reports, adding: "But until we can see the investigation is completed it is not possible to give further details or to confirm or deny that issue."

There is growing media speculation at the role of wanted British extremist Samantha Lewthwaite, daughter of a British soldier and widow of suicide bomber Germaine Lindsay, who blew himself up on a London Underground train on July 7, 2005, killing 26 people.

Lewthwaite is wanted in Kenya, and is accused of links to the Shebab.

Intelligence sources from two foreign countries who could not be named said there had been no leaks or "chatter" ahead of the attack, despite close monitoring of the Shebab's operations, suggesting the insurgents may have come from a different cell.

A Kenyan security source and a Western intelligence official said Israeli forces were involved in operations to end the mall siege, along with British and US agents.

Police also said they had arrested more than 10 people for questioning.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has called the attack "despicable and beastly".

Shocked witnesses said the attackers tried to weed out non-Muslims for execution by demanding they recite the Shahada, the Muslim profession of faith. Children were also executed.

As well as scores of Kenyans -- from ordinary workers to the president's nephew -- the dead include six Britons including a British-Australian, two Canadians including a diplomat, a Chinese woman, a Dutch woman, two French women, two Indians, a South African and a South Korean.

"The people who did this, they are vigilantes, they are animals," British businessman Louis Bawa, whose eight-year-old daughter and wife were killed, told the Daily Telegraph.

Security camera footage seen by Kenyan media showed gunmen firing a barrage of bullets as they moved through the mall.

Away from Westgate, Nairobi on Tuesday appeared to have returned to largely business as usual, but the attacks have shocked Kenyans deeply.

Blood donor appeals ended after banks filled with donations from hundreds, while over $650,000 (490,000 euros) has been raised to support the families affected.

Israeli interests in Kenya have come under attack before, and the Westgate mall -- frequented by well-to-do Kenyans, diplomats, UN workers and other expatriates -- has long been seen as a potential target.

The siege, which has revived memories of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, is the worst attack in Nairobi since an Al-Qaeda bombing at the US embassy killed more than 200 people in 1998.

US President Barack Obama, whose father was Kenyan, has called Kenyatta offering "whatever law enforcement support that is necessary".

Seaside Home Interior Design Decorating Tips and Ideas | Inhabit ...

By admin on September 24, 2013

Seaside homes can be a real pleasure to live in and some seaside home interior design decorating tips and ideas help in offering the most beautiful look to the interiors. The decoration is enhanced by the use of objects particular to seaside and a construction that gives a view of the blue waters.

Room by the blue waters

luxury cushioned chairs

The construction of the house offers a view of the sea through the glass walls facing the sea. This particular room serves best as the living room with a number of luxury cushioned chairs in light hues. An ancient wooden chair would break the rhythm. A glass table with a potted plant at the centre faced by all the chairs can make a perfect seating arrangement. The dominant color remains white to absorb the feel of the sea.

Beautify the balcony

Beautify the balcony

A balcony offering a view of a small garden below can be just great. Appropriate furniture on the large balcony can be the perfect place for enjoying the rising and receding of the waves. The open and spacious balcony in white can is beautified by a large chandelier hanging by the side where the roof has been slightly lowered. The dominant white can be complemented by black wrought iron chairs and sofas with some extra cushions. Wooden floors always complete the look.

Use the landing area

landing of the seaside house

The landing of the seaside house can be used for a beautiful and cosy seating arrangement. For this seaside home interior design decorating, a couple of simply designed chairs can be used with table in between. A carelessly fashioned standard sized log can do for the table. It evokes a natural feel while taking up lesser space. A large glass window offering a view of the sea on one side and painting on the opposite wall offer a warm feel to the landing.

Eco-friendly kitchen

Eco-friendly kitchen

An eco-friendly environment is always welcome. The kitchen is the right place where one can go eco-friendly. The key concept lies in streamlining so that the room becomes less congested and more spacious. The cabinets can be done with wood, the production of which abides by the environmental standards. The kitchen island could work pretty well as the dining table with chair kept on the sides. While this was for a kitchen with a small space, a sufficiently large kitchen can have bright blue walls and silver-grey floor tiles to enhance the oceanic effect. The light at the breakfast area can be amplified with the use of glass windows all over the wall on the east.

Doing the bedroom in colors

The bedroom is the right place where the homeowner can play with light hues. The large windows constituting half of the wall open to the deep blue sea. A couple of chairs with a simply designed bed can do the magic.

With the seaside home interior design decorating tips and ideas the home owner can have a seaside house with perfect interiors.

Derek Cianfrance Directing Those Guys Have All the Fun

derek-cianfrance-espn-slice

Derek Cianfrance?s first two feature films, Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, were heavy, family dramas.? Earlier this month, he signed on to direct another one with The Light Between Oceans, which is about a husband a wife dealing with the consequences of raising an abandoned infant when it washes up on the shore of their lighthouse.? But it turns out that Cianfrance isn?t opposed to somewhat lighter fare as The Wrap is reporting he?s set to adapt ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun.? James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales? book provides an oral history of the sports network from those who worked for it over the past several decades.? Fox originally picked up the rights in 2011, but then put the feature into turnaround, which allowed Focus Features to swoop in and develop the project.? Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti (Fifty Shades of Grey) will produce, and they?re currently searching for a writer.

Hit the jump for more.

There will certainly be dramatic conflict within the story, but this looks like it will be a big change of pace for Cianfrancse, and while I?m happy to see whatever he does next, I?d love to see his take on this material.? I don?t know where the focus will be, but I have to imagine that Keith Olbermann will be a big part of the story since he was a key figure in the history of ESPN?s marquee show SportsCenter, and he has butted heads with every network he?s ever been on.? So whom should they get to play the controversial anchor?? Maybe Ben Affleck?

Here?s the official synopsis for ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun:

It began, in 1979, as a mad idea of starting a cable channel to televise local sporting events throughout the state of Connecticut. Today, ESPN is arguably the most successful network in modern television history, spanning eight channels in the Unites States and around the world. But the inside story of its rise has never been fully told-until now.

Drawing upon over 500 interviews with the greatest names in ESPN?s history and an All-Star collection of some of the world?s finest athletes, bestselling authors James Miller and Tom Shales take us behind the cameras. Now, in their own words, the men and women who made ESPN great reveal the secrets behind its success-as well as the many scandals, rivalries, off-screen battles and triumphs that have accompanied that ascent. From the unknown producers and business visionaries to the most famous faces on television, it?s all here. [Amazon]

Nonowned and Hired Auto Liability for Nonprofit Organizations ...

Hired and nonowned auto liability is a confusing topic for a lot of business owners, not just nonprofits.

But human service nonprofits often have some additional risks that run of the mill main street businesses don?t.

Unique Exposure of Nonprofits to Nonowned or Hired Auto Liability Situations

Here are a few that jump to mind (feel free to add to the list on your own time):

  1. Volunteers driving their own cars
  2. Transporting children
  3. Transporting elderly
  4. Did I mention volunteers?
  5. The need to hire vehicles for special use or events (i.e. to pick up donated items or deliver donated items or for a special field trip or event)
  6. Route driving for donation pickup (by volunteers)

We could go on. ?Simply put, nonprofits sometimes have additional driving concerns that regular businesses do not have.

What Is Hired and Nonowned Liability?

Let me define a couple terms. ?When I speak to a client I almost feel eyes glaze over through the phone. I?ve learned that I can?t off-handedly toss out the term ?hired and nonowned auto liability? and expect someone to know what the heck I?m talking about.

Hired Auto Liability: This refers to liability derived from hiring, renting, or leasing a vehicle. I rent a car from Hertz, and thus assume a hired auto liability exposure.

Nonowned Auto Liability: This liability coverage refers to use of a vehicle that is NOT owned by your organization, but used by an employee or volunteer or anybody else doing work on behalf of your organization. The example is simply this: Your bookkeeper gets in his own vehicle and drives to the bank. That car is not owned by your nonprofit, but it?s being used for your business.

So, the incomplete shorthand is this:

Any car that is not registered and titled to your organization that is used to get work done for your organization is either a hired or a nonowned vehicle.

Car Wreck

An Example of a Nonowned Auto Claim Scenario

Let me explain how the insurance works by using my job as an example.

When I drive my vehicle to go visit a client, my car is a nonowned auto for my insurance agency.

Let?s suppose I cause an accident that results in roughly $1,000,000 in damages. The damaged persons sue both Brett Cohrs (who has personal auto liability limits of $500,000) and my insurance agency, Hamby & Aloisio (who has a $1,000,000 hired/nonowned auto liability policy attached to their insurance package). ?This is ?how things should shake out:

  1. My personal insurance carrier would provide defense for me and and Hamby & Aloisio: It was my fault. My policy starts off.
  2. This would be defended up to the payment of my full policy limits of $500,000. At that point, my carrier is done. Good-bye.
  3. Hamby & Aloisio?s policy, with it?s nonowned auto liability coverage would defend?Hamby and Aloisio ONLY and pay on behalf of Hamby & Aloisio if considered liable for any remaining damages of $500,000.
  4. If the court still considers me liable for any remaining damages, it?s time that I dip into my savings, sell my house, my baseball card collection, and start working some extra side jobs. Hamby?s poicy will not defend me or pay on my behalf on the basic auto policy that most organizations take out.

So, with the basic, unchanged commercial auto policy, an employee is NOT an insured when driving his or her personal car. If the car was rented by the employer/organization, then the employee would be covered. If the employee took the rental out himself, then he wouldn?t have coverage. ?The devil truly is in the details.

What Hired and Nonowned Auto Liability Intends to Provide: Excess Liability

The nonowned and hired auto liability coverage is intended to act as an excess policy over a driver?s personal auto liability. In other words, it provides some additional liability limits over any policy that is in place already.

If it?s a hired vehicle and the rental car liability coverage was purchased, the hired auto liability would respond after that liability coverage was exhausted.

Is all of that as clear as mud?

What Should You Do Now?

Let?s just put it this way: If you are a business and people EVER drive their own cars on your behalf, you need to have hired and nonowned liability on your policy. You cannot control the insurance coverage one of your employees or volunteers has in place. And you cannot predict the severity of a potential auto accident.

In order to better protect your nonprofit, you should discuss these liability options with your agent.

I?ve seen costs as low as $150 to add this policy annually. Typically, it ranges between $150 and $500-600 to have the $1,000,000 limits.?

If you?re a nonprofit manager, it would make sense to have this policy quoted and presented to your Board of Directors to discuss. It?s a very inexpensive source for $1,000,000 in coverage should an employee or volunteer cause an accident while driving a car that your nonprofit does not own.

Questions and risk management checklist:

  1. Does your nonprofit allow employees and volunteers to drive their own car on your behalf?
  2. Do you ever rent vehicles?
  3. Do you require your employees and volunteers to provide proof of personal insurance?
  4. Do you require those personal liability limits to be at least $100,000/$300,000?
  5. What would happen if a large auto claim caused by your employee or volunteer resulted in a settlement demand on your organization?
  6. Discuss your use of any vehicles (or your employee or volunteer use) with your insurance professional as the content in this article is informational. Each situation is unique and different.

Please leave questions and comments below. I?m happy to bounce ideas around with you.

Loans challenge big money's leasing model for U.S. rooftop solar

By Nichola Groom

(Reuters) - Falling prices and growing acceptance of home solar power is sparking a challenge to major financiers who have anchored the U.S. industry using leases, as smaller banks and other lenders rush to offer homeowners loans to buy systems.

Loans offer homeowners a path to solar system ownership and the opportunity to capture for themselves federal tax credits worth 30 percent of the value.

Well over 60 percent of residential systems in top solar states like California and Arizona today are owned by investors or companies which lease systems to homeowners for a monthly fee.

Investors like Goldman Sachs Group Inc , U.S. Bancorp , Google Inc , lured in large part by the tax credits, have helped propel the rapid growth of leasing companies like SolarCity Corp , Sunrun Inc, Sungevity Inc and Clean Power Finance Inc.

But prices of systems have fallen to $20,000-$30,000 for a typical home, equivalent to the price of a car. This has made ownership more feasible and reduced the number of years it can take for a system to pay for itself through lower power bills.

"It became glaringly obvious that someone needed to provide a path to ownership for these systems. It's not a $40,000 or $50,000 expense anymore," said Jim Petersen, founder of Fremont, California-based PetersenDean, one of the biggest U.S. installers. "And why would you give up your tax credit? Anybody that has a job has a tax appetite."

PIONEERS MIXED

The leasing pioneers are mixed when it comes to their response to the loan trend.

SolarCity, for example, does not offer a loan, but customers can secure their own loans to finance the purchase of a SolarCity system.

Sunrun said it is focused on solar leases and a similar product called power purchase agreements. It does not offer a loan product.

Sungevity has partnered with Boston-based Admirals Bank on a loan, and Clean Power Finance, a startup that makes solar financing products available to installers through a software platform, is preparing to roll out its first loan.

"The fact that people might talk about ?I might borrow for it, I might lease for it' - that makes it mainstream," said Danny Kennedy, Sungevity's co-founder.

The solar business already was facing a drop in the federal solar tax credit to 10 percent in 2017, an event analysts say could make investing in solar leasing funds less attractive for the likes of Google and U.S. Bancorp.

Tax equity investors enjoy returns of 8 to 12 percent, on average, by investing in solar leases, according to executives at several leasing companies. The rate of return on loans tends to be tied to overall interest rates.

Google, which has committed $355 million to rooftop solar funds with SolarCity and Clean Power Finance, declined to comment on solar loans or whether it will continue to invest in solar leases once the federal tax credit declines.

U.S. Bancorp did not respond to a request for comment. Goldman would not comment.

GRASSROOTS MARKETING

For homeowners, a lot depends on state incentives and the length of the loan.

Solar panel maker and project developer SunPower Corp said Colorado has a better incentive for customers who buy, meaning loan payments can be lower than lease payments and made over a shorter period of time.

In California, the nation's top solar market, leases still cost less overall, SunPower Chief Executive Tom Werner said, adding that it is still 'early days' for loans in the Golden State.

SunPower, majority owned by Total SA , said it is seeing equivalent interest in loans and leases, and is expanding its loan capacity. Just this week, the company inked a deal with Digital Federal Credit Union, the Marlborough, Massachusetts-based lead originator for a consortium of credit unions that may provide up to $100 million in financing for the SunPower loan program. Other SunPower loan financing partners include Salt Lake City-based Enerbank USA, a unit of CMS Energy , and Mountain View, California-based First Tech Federal Credit Union.

Still, Werner said it is too early to say whether loans will emerge as the winners. "Will eventually loans be the dominant choice? We don't know, so we are going to offer both," he said.

Boston-based Admirals Bank, arguably the most aggressive marketer of the solar loan, 18 months ago began offering a solar loan product, which essentially is a second mortgage. It now works with about 700 installers, including PetersenDean.

"We're going through this grassroots effort to educate folks on the benefits (of loans)," said Robert Banaski, head of retail banking and operations at Admirals.

There are small signs that such efforts are working. Data from GTM Research shows third-party-owned systems have lost market share in key solar states Arizona, Massachusetts and Colorado since late last year.

In Arizona, a recovering housing market has led to an increase in the number of systems being financed through home mortgages and equity loans. Leases and power purchase agreements - which allow consumers to lock in electricity rates for 20 years rather than paying to lease solar equipment - have dropped to 85 percent of the market from 90 percent in three quarters.

In Massachusetts, solar loans have driven leasing's market share down to 60 percent from 63.9 percent late last year, and Admiral is facing competitors, like Sungage, which this year began offering solar loans through a program with the Connecticut Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority.

Admirals' solar loan volumes have increased 250 percent in the last year, according to Banaski, who declined to give exact figures. "We dipped our toe in the water and it just took off for us."

Report: Shooter lied about previous arrest, debts

This booking photo provided by the Fort Worth Police Department shows Aaron Alexis, arrested in September, 2010, on suspicion of discharging a firearm in the city limits. Alexis is suspected to be the shooter at the Washington D,C. Navy Yard Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. (AP Photo/ Fort Worth Police Department)

This undated cell phone photo provided by Kristi Kinard Suthamtewakul shows a smiling Aaron Alexis in Fort Worth, Texas. The FBI has identified Alexis, 34, as the gunman in the Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 shooting rampage at at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington that left thirteen dead, including himself. (AP Photo/Kristi Kinard Suthamtewakul)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Washington Navy Yard shooter lied about a previous arrest and failed to disclose thousands of dollars in debts when he applied for a security clearance in the Navy.

Then federal investigators dismissed the omissions, and made one of their own ? deleting any reference to Aaron Alexis' use of a gun in that arrest.

The gaps in his record eventually allowed him to work in the secure Navy building where he gunned down 12 workers last week, underscoring weaknesses with the clearance process that Navy officials are targeting for change.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus recommended Monday that all police reports ? not just arrests or convictions ? involving an individual must be included when a background check is done. He also recommended that the Navy enhance its management of sailor evaluations and fitness reports by assigning more senior officers to oversee them.

The Navy, in a report released Monday, revealed new details about Alexis' Navy service, including his failure to reveal the 2004 arrest over a parking disagreement in Seattle. And officials said the background report given to the Navy omitted the fact that he had shot out the tires of another person's car during that dispute.

Instead, the report from the Office of Personnel Management said Alexis "deflated" the tires.

Defense officials have acknowledged that a lot of red flags were missed in Alexis' background, allowing him to maintain a secret-level security clearance and have access to a secure Navy facility despite a string of behavioral problems and brushes with the law. Over the past week, they have been struggling to determine what might have been missed, and what changes could be made in order to try and prevent similar violence in the future.

So far, however, the detailed reviews only underscore how subjective the security checks can be and how difficult it is to predict violent behavior based only on minor conduct issues that could easily be overlooked.

A review of Alexis' nearly four-year Navy career was ordered last week by Mabus.

According to a senior Navy official, the police report included information about the gun and said Alexis was arrested, charged with malicious mischief and fingerprinted and spent the night in jail. But when he appeared in court the charges were dismissed and he believed the incident was erased from his record.

The OPM report, provided to the Navy, left out the gun in its description of the incident, saying Alexis deflated the man's tires in retaliation for the man putting an unknown substance in Alexis' gas tank. It was not clear Monday who was at fault for the omission. Officials said they didn't know whether the summary provided to the Navy was compiled by OPM, or if it was put together by the company that investigated Alexis for his clearance ? U.S. Investigations Services, or USIS ? and passed on to OPM.

The discrepancy, however, prompted Mabus to recommend changes in the process to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Hagel has ordered two sweeping reviews of military security and employee screening programs, and Mabus' recommendation will be considered as part of those studies.

A senior Navy official said military officials only became aware that a gun was used in the tire incident when they went back through all the records last week, after the Navy Yard shooting. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly by name, so spoke on condition of anonymity.

The tragedy has revealed a number of problems with the security clearance system, including its focus on whether someone is a treason threat rather than a potential killer.

When a check of Alexis' fingerprints disclosed the Seattle police incident, it triggered a follow-up interview for the security clearance. An OPM memo about the interview included multiple questions about debts he failed to pay and problems with collection agencies. In each case, the memo noted that Alexis was having financial troubles, was arranging repayment plans and only he and his mother knew of the debts.

"The subject does not feel that knowledge of any of his financial issues could be used against him for blackmail or coercion," the memo said.

The fact that Alexis did not disclose the debts on his security form was dismissed in the memo, which noted that he answered "no" to the questions because he was working on payment plans and thought the issues would be resolved. He also answered "no" to questions about his police record, including whether he had been arrested, charged, convicted or issued a summons, citation or ticket to appear in court in a criminal proceeding.

The OPM memo said Alexis told the investigator he answered "no" to those questions "because the charge was dismissed and he was told by Connell (his attorney) that the charge would be removed from his record."

The Navy also released other details about Alexis' troubled service record, including two efforts by his commander to impose non-judicial punishments for various infractions.

The Navy said Alexis failed to report to work because he was in jail for a disorderly conduct arrest outside a nightclub in Georgia in September 2008. His commander ordered the loss of a half-month's pay for two months and a one-rank demotion, but suspended both punishments because it was Alexis' first offense.

About a year later, he jumped off some stairs at another nightclub and broke his ankle. His commander demoted him, but Alexis appealed. Another commander later concluded there wasn't enough evidence that Alexis was drunk, so the punishment was dismissed.

He was arrested again a year later, for discharging a firearm in his apartment. Navy officials began preparing a less-than-honorable discharge, but it was never completed because he said the incident was an accident, and no charges were filed. Several months later he received an honorable discharge from the Navy.

While in hindsight, the string of events could have set off alarm bells within the Navy, officials said Monday that it is difficult even now to see them as glaring indicators of last week's shooting rampage.

Biden to raise money for Iowa Democratic candidate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden is planning a fundraiser for Iowa congressional candidate Jim Mowrer.

The White House says Biden will attend the private event Tuesday at a home in Washington.

Biden has been raising money for Democratic committees, but it's rare for him to hold fundraisers for individual House candidates.

This isn't Biden's first event benefiting Iowa Democrats. He traveled to Iowa last week for a major annual fundraiser that frequently attracts potential presidential candidates.

Iowa's caucuses kick off the presidential primary season every four years. Biden hasn't ruled out a third run for president in 2016.

Biden is also hosting Jewish community leaders at his official residence Tuesday. On Wednesday, he'll speak in New York at an awards show during the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.

Valve announces Steam OS, a free Linux-based operating system ...

Valve already dominates the PC gaming scene with its digital distribution platform Steam, but the company wants to take its market share one step further with SteamOS, a free operating system designed for the TV and living room alike.

The company says that while it?s been exploring the best way to bring Steam to the living room ? the highly anticipated Steambox is still in development ? it has decided that an operating system ?built around Steam itself? is the best way forward.

SteamOS leverages ?the rock-solid architecture of Linux? and will be available in the near future as a free, standalone operating system.

Screen Shot 2013 09 23 at 18.25.13 Valve announces SteamOS, a free Linux based operating system and gaming platform for the living room

It?s still unclear exactly what SteamOS will run on though. Valve says the traditional Steam client and SteamOS will support in-home steaming, giving players the ability to play all of their existing Windows and Mac games on a SteamOS ?machine? hooked up to their TV. It sounds pretty similar to the Remote Play functionality offered by the PS3/4 and PS Vita/PS Vita TV.

Valve is also working to bring media services to the platform ? no word yet on what those are, but a crucial feature if SteamOS machines are to compete with the Xbox One and other set-top streaming boxes.

Steam Family Sharing, announced earlier this month as a way to ease some of the inherent restrictions with digital game libraries, will also be baked into SteamOS. Valve says the feature will be bolstered with additional options to help parents control what content their children can access.

A new platform means that Valve has to attract renewed support from the development community. Valve says hundreds of games are already running natively on SteamOS, while the aforementioned in-home streaming will cover everything else missing from its 3,000 plus library.

Valve?s decision to create its own standalone platform isn?t too surprising. Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve and a former Microsoft employee, emphasized his support for Linux last year while describing Windows 8 as a ?catastrophe?.

SteamOS should give the company much greater control over its distribution platform, as well as a more consistent experience for end-users.

All we need now is something to run it on. Valve says it will be free to license for manufacturers and also a free download for users. But we?re still waiting on a true, flagship product that can be sold to consumers. Valve?s teaser page shows that it still has two announcements waiting in the wings. Is one of them the long-awaited Steam Box?

Prosser pilot trying to visit every public airfield in Washington

Loretto J. Hulse
Tri-City Herald

PROSSER -- There?s no keeping Bill Nelson?s feet on the ground. The Prosser pilot has had his eye on the sky since the 1970s, when he first earned his pilot?s license in California.

He has flown small planes, paragliders and gliders and was a glider instructor for five years. Most recently Nelson, 61, has been flying light sport aircraft.

They?re a special category sanctioned by the Federal Aviation Administration.

?Light sport aircraft are real planes. They have an engine and are enclosed. And they?re capable of going cross country,? Nelson said. ?However, they can?t weigh over 1,320 pounds, carry more than two people or go over 10,000 feet. And you can?t fly at night.?

The appeal of light sport aircraft is they?re less expensive to buy than a regular small plane like a Cessna, which can run $100,000 and up, he said. The average cost of a light sport aircraft is between $20,000 and $40,000.

?It also costs half as much to learn to fly one as it does a regular small plane and half as much to rent,? Nelson said. ?The safety issues remain the same. You have to know how to fly and how to do it safely.?

Since January, Nelson has been working on one of the to-do?s on his bucket list: visiting every public airfield in Washington. So far he?s logged 98, mainly in Eastern Washington, and flown about 3,500 miles.

?I only have 20 to 30 to left to do, and they?re concentrated on the West Side, mainly around Olympia and a couple in the northeast corner of the state,? he said.

Many of his stops are touch-and-go. Nelson doesn?t even stop the plane or get out. That?s what he did at Seatac.

?People told me I was crazy wanting to go there, but I talked to a Seatac air traffic controller -- who thought I was crazy too -- and he told me exactly how to do it. It was strictly touch-and-go. They wouldn?t let me stop. I came in behind one jet and there was another right behind me,? he said.

Some of the airfields Nelson?s visited have been little more than a cleared area with a dirt or grass runway.

?They?ve been interesting. Once, flying over Snoqualmie Pass, I did a touch-and-go in a clearing surrounded by tall, tall pines,? he said.

What he forgot to factor in was when pilots do a touch-and-go, they use half the runway coming in and have the other half to accelerate and take off.

?As I began to climb I saw those trees coming up fast. I told myself to stay calm and aimed my plane at the lowest trees I could find,? he said.

As he cleared them, Nelson found himself flying about 50 feet above the traffic on Interstate 90.

?That was kind of exciting,? he said.

Nelson?s not trying for any kind of a record. Logging visits to the airports, just like flying, is for his own personal satisfaction.

?When you see the beauty of the San Juans and the North Cascades ... it?s amazing to see them from the air, from God?s perspective. The rolling hills of the Palouse look like a giant?s golf course,? he said.

Monday through Wednesday Nelson works as a respiratory therapist at Kennewick General Hospital, which leaves him half the week for flying. He?s also looking to the future and plans to take a course in repairing light sport aircraft.

?And I want to become a light sport aircraft instructor too,? he said. ?I?m coming up for retirement next year, and I?m not one for sitting around watching reruns on TV.?

Northeast Missouri has a high prevalence of heart disease and obesity/overweight among its adult population, sadly, for those adults it will be very difficult for most of them to improve their overall health and their heart health in particular. There are many risk factors for heart disease such as being overweight, poor diet and exercise, diabetes, and high blood pressure. According to MICA and OSEDA data Missouri has a 63% rate of overweight/obese adults in its population which has led to heart disease and heart related illnesses to surpass cancer as the number one cause of death and hospitalization in Missouri. If you couple that with the 25% self-reported physical inactivity numbers, the 20% high blood pressure numbers, and the 74% of adults who claim they don?t get enough fruits or vegetables a day the problem is rapidly becoming clear. These numbers are considered?under reported?and the actual numbers may be much higher. If Missouri is going to lower its prevalence of heart disease and overweight adults then the education and training must start at a very young age in order to create adults with a lifelong commitment to fitness and health. These children don?t have to all grow up to be athletes, they just need to be athletically inclined enough that they stay in shape throughout their lives and lower their chances of getting heart disease and pass on those habits to their children. Healthy children with good eating and exercise habits grow up to become healthy adults who have less health issues and who are more productive members of society that miss less days of work and visit the hospital less than those who are unhealthy.?

What NEMO RAAWKS is trying to accomplish is to take young children between the ages of three to ten and instruct them in correct nutrition, fitness, and how to integrate those two into their daily lives. It?s important to start training the children young so that the lessons can sink in and they can start practicing these lessons on a daily basis so it becomes a habit they will keep throughout their lives. NEMO RAAWKS is committed to doing this by introducing better nutritional education in schools and also revamping physical education in school and at home to improve the students overall fitness and health. The fitness model will consist of developing correct fundamental movement techniques that the students can then build off of throughout their lives. Techniques such as correct walking and running form, crawling, lifting, carrying, throwing, catching, balancing, jumping, climbing, and swimming can all be built upon in a fun and engaging way. As adults we think that all of these are very simple tasks to do, and they are, but only because we?ve been doing them all our lives and have developed the muscle memory to do them easily. However, many children and adults have learned incorrectly how to execute these movements and can be injured as a result. The model that these students will be learning from is called MovNat, which is all about teaching fundamental movement techniques.

You can click on this link to see a sample of what MovNat teaches:
MovNat

Imagine if children learned these movements in school and how much more coordinated and fit they would be as adults.

Midday naps help preschoolers learn, study says

(AP) ? Any parent knows that a daytime nap can help keep preschoolers from getting cranky. Now a small study suggests that it helps them learn, too.

The lesson for grown-ups: Don't cut out the naps if you try to cram more learning activities into a preschooler's day, say researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

They studied 40 children, ages 3 to 5. In the mornings of test days, the children were shown a grid with pictures of nine or 12 items like a cat or an umbrella. That afternoon and the next morning, the children were tested on how well they remembered the location of each image.

All the children were tested under two conditions, one in which they were encouraged to nap before the afternoon test, and another in which they were kept awake. Without a nap, they were about 65 percent accurate. With a nap, their accuracy reached about 75 percent.

The research shows that "naps are important for preschool children," Rebecca Spencer, senior author of the study, said in a statement.

The study was published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

(AP Photo/Mohammad Sajjad)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Angry Pakistani Christians on Monday denounced the deadliest attack ever in this country against members of their faith as the death toll from the church bombings the day before climbed to 85.

A pair of suicide bombers blew themselves up amid hundreds of worshippers outside a historic church in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday.

The attack on the All Saints Church in the city of Peshawar, which also wounded over 140 people, occurred as worshippers were leaving after service to get a free meal of rice offered on the front lawn.

A wing of the Pakistani Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the bombings, saying they would continue to target non-Muslims until the U.S. stops drone attacks in the remote tribal region of Pakistan.

The bombings raised new questions about the Pakistani government's push to strike a peace deal with the militants to end a decade-long insurgency that has killed thousands of people.

"What dialogue are we talking about? Peace with those who are killing innocent people," asked the head of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance, Paul Bhatti, whose brother, a federal minister, was gunned down by an Islamic extremist in 2011.

"They don't want dialogue," said Bhatti. "They don't want peace."

The death toll on Monday climbed to 85, after seven more of the wounded in Peshawar died overnight and Monday, according to the commissioner of Peshawar, Sahibzada Anees.

"Our state and our intelligence agencies are so weak that anybody can kill anyone anytime. It is a shame," said Bhatti.

Angry Christians blocked roads around the country to protest the bombings. On one of the main roads coming into the capital of Islamabad, demonstrators burned tires and demanded government protection for the members of the Christian minority.

"Our people have been killed ... Nobody seems to bother about us. No one apprehended the killers," said Aqeel Masih, one of the protesters. He added that he fears Pakistanis will simply forget about the bloodshed in a few days.

In the southern port city of Karachi, a few hundred demonstrators chanted "Stop killing Christians!" and demanded that those who attacked their community be held accountable.

"We want an end to extremism, terrorism and barbarianism in Pakistan," said Bashir John, a priest.

Missionary schools around the country would be closed for three days, said Christian leader Nasir Gill. He said 68 bodies of Peshawar victims were buried Sunday and the rest would be buried today.

Churches and other places important to the Christian community in Peshawar have been given extra security, said police official Noor Khan.

But this has not been sufficient to appease angry Christians in Pakistan, who want the government to take even stronger steps to protect them.

Many churches, as well as mosques and other religious institutions, already receive some type of police protection although many Christians say that is too little. A police officer who was supposed to be protecting the church where the suicide bombers attacked was killed.

Christians are a minority in Pakistan, where roughly 96 percent of the country's 180 million people is Muslim. The rest belong to other religions, including Christianity. Christians have often been attacked by Sunni Muslim militants, who view them as enemies of Islam because of their faith.

While many Pakistanis condemned the Sunday bombings, Christians have often faced discrimination across the country. They often find it difficult to get access to education or better jobs and are known for having to contend with menial labor such as garbage collecting or street cleaning.

Also Monday, a bomb exploded near a police patrol in southwestern Baluchistan province, killing four people, including three policemen, said police officer Abdullah Khan. The bombing occurred in Pashin district, some 70 kilometers (45 miles) north of the provincial capital, Quetta, said Khan.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Baluchistan is home to both Islamic militants and nationalists who have been fighting an insurgency against the government for decades for a greater share of the province's natural resources.

The premiere of

The premiere of "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1 will occur soon! The girl with the yellow umbrella, aka the mother, will finally come face to face with the gang. Find out where to watch it! (Photo: CBS)

Watch "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1?online here. The newest HIMYM episode finally gives us a better look at what to expect from the mythical mother. Revealed at the end of last season??we'll get a good idea of what she is like while we watch "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1. The gang is all back and gearing up for Barney and Robin's wedding. With the show entering its ninth year, fans are expecting big developments from season 9. While some may argue that "How I Met Your Mother" should have ended sooner, we will certainly miss the show when this final season is complete. Make sure to watch "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1?when it premieres Monday!

Follow Us

The much-talked about mother had not been revealed in the show until just this past season. In the eighth season's final episode, we finally saw the yellow umbrella carrying mama Mosby. Weirdly enough the mom from "How I Met Your Mother", played by Cristin Milioti, resembles a combination of Lily and Robin. Known only as "the girl with the yellow umbrella," Milioti's character doesn't even have a name, yet we almost know everything about her. We're sure more will be revealed once we watch "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1??but we already know quite a bit regarding the mother of Ted Mosby's children.

?

"How I Met Your Mother" follows the adventures of Ted, Marshall, Lily Robin and Barney. The story, taking place in New York, is Ted's portrayal of how he met the mother of his children. Sure he's been telling the story for the past 8 years, but we're sure the kids don't mind. One could also argue the show is about Marshall and Lily's loving relationship, or Barney's never ending quest to hook up with the women of the Big Apple. But at its core HIMYM is the story of Ted and the girl with the yellow umbrella. Other seasons may have strayed away from this plot somewhat, but we have a feeling when we watch "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1?things will get back on track. Though to be honest, we can't help but wonder why the show's writers continue to harp on the Ted/Robin situation when we already have the mother. Or maybe so we think....

You can watch "How I Met Your Mother" season 9 episode 1 Monday night, September 23 on CBS at 8/7c. You can also see the episode on their site. Make sure to let us know in the comments what you think of the episode!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins top actress in comedy

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won her second straight Emmy as best comedy actress for her role as vice president of the United States in the HBO series "Veep."

Her victory Sunday honored her for a portrayal of the cynical Selina Meyer in the send-up of modern-day Washington.

Louis-Dreyfus has now won more Emmys for "Veep" than she did in two roles that reached a wider audience. She won best actress in a comedy in 2006 for the CBS series "The New Adventures of Old Christine." She won a supporting actress award in 1996 for playing Elaine Benes in "Seinfeld."

?Obam-Me?: President Obama?s Nickname According To Peggy Noonan

?Obam-me? is the nickname some in the White House have given the President of the United States, if you believe columnist Peggy Noonan.

Noonan, who is a columnist for the Wall Street Journal, says she overheard some staffers calling their boss the unflattering nickname when she overheard them chatting with some senators.

But why exactly did the staffers choose such a nickname?

?Because it?s all about him and his big thoughts,? Noonan writes in a column. ?I guess the second-term team is not quite as adoring as the first.?

Peggy Noonan is a former speech writer for President Ronald Reagan who has joined other vocal Republicans in saying the President is acting all self-absorbed lately.

Obama is not having a good second term, recently his inability to handle the situation in Syria coupled with Russian President Vladimir Putin?s apparent new role as global leader, made the President and the United States look weak.

Calling the Commander in Chief ?Obam-me? is a reflection of just how bad things are going for this administration, who doesn?t seem to have a clear message, on anything.

One of the most vocal critics has been former GOP congressman Joe Scarborough, who is the host of his MSNBC Morning Joe show and recently slammed the Obama for going ahead with a speech on the economy while the Navy Yard shooting was happening almost simultaneously this past Monday.

?President Barack Obama must be either bored or out of touch to have launched a partisan attack on Republicans as the shooting at Washington?s Navy Yard was unfolding?, Scarborough said Tuesday.

?You would like to think he would have said to himself, ?Guys, let?s do this tomorrow,?? Scarborough asked. ?As the leader of the country, you would think that.?

Stephen Hayes of The Weekly Standard called the decision to press on with the partisan address as ?small and petty?.

Do you think it?s disrespectful to call the President of the United States ?Obam-me??

Syria meets first chemical weapons deadline

Saturday was the deadline for Syria to give a full account of its chemical weapons arsenal. Ultimately, a US-Russia deal calls for Syria's inventory of chemical weapons to be destroyed.

By Thomas Escritt,?Reuters / September 21, 2013

Samples brought back by the U.N. chemical weapons inspection team are checked in upon their arrival at The Hague, Netherlands in August. Syria has sent the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons a full declaration outlining its weapons program, the organization said Saturday Sept. 21, 2013.

Syria has handed over information about its chemical arsenal to a U.N.-backed weapons watchdog, meeting the first deadline of an ambitious disarmament operation that averted the threat of Western air strikes.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said on Saturday it had "received the expected disclosure" from Damascus, 24 hours after saying it had been given a partial document from Syrian authorities.

It said it was reviewing the information, handed over after President Bashar al-Assad agreed to destroy Syria's chemical weapons in the wake of a sarin gas strike in Damascus's suburbs last month - the world's deadliest chemical attack in 25 years.

Washington blamed Assad's forces for the attack, which it said killed more than 1,400 people. Assad blamed rebels battling to overthrow him, saying it made no sense for his forces to use chemical weapons when they were gaining the upper hand and while U.N. chemical inspectors were staying in central Damascus.

The timetable for disarmament was laid down by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov a week ago in Geneva when they set aside sharp differences over Syria to address the chemical weapons issue.

Their plan set a Saturday deadline for Syria to give a full account of the weapons it possesses. Security experts say it has about 1,000 tonnes of mustard gas, VX and sarin - the nerve gas U.N. inspectors found had been used in the Aug. 21 attack.

The U.S. State Department said on Friday, after the OPCW announced Syria's initial declaration, that it was studying the material. "An accurate list is vital to ensure the effective implementation," spokeswoman Marie Harf said.

RARE AGREEMENT

Once the OPCW executive has voted to follow the Lavrov-Kerry plan in a meeting expected early next week, the Security Council is due to give its endorsement of the arrangements - marking a rare consensus after two years of East-West deadlock over Syria.

However, the two powers are divided over how to ensure compliance with the accord. U.S. President Barack Obama has warned that he is still prepared to attack Syria, even without a U.N. mandate, if Assad reneges on the deal.

Russia, which says it is not clear who was behind the Aug. 21 attack and has a veto in the Security Council, opposes attempts by Western powers to write in an explicit and immediate threat of penalties under what are known as Chapter VII powers.

Home Inspections for Sellers: Why It Can Be Worth It | AOL Real Estate

magnifying glass examining...

Shutterstock

By Donna Fuscaldo

"The buyer has the upper hand when they have an inspection," says Coldwell Banker consumer specialist and agent Jessica Edwards. "If you are willing to do it ahead of time, you give the control back to the seller."

One of the most common ways to sink a home sale or lower the bidding price is a surprise finding in a home inspection, and this is prompting some sellers to take the precautionary step of having an inspection before listing. A home inspection can cost as much as $500, but real estate experts say it's a great way to take any of the unknowns out of the home selling equation.

According to real estate agents, having a home inspection prior to listing offers a host of benefits with little upfront cost. It identifies any major problems that could later scare off would-be bidders. Buying a house is an emotional and scary experience, especially for first-time buyers, and if the home inspection comes back with a major repair needed, it could scare them off, even if the seller agrees to fix it.

"If you have the items repaired or replaced ahead of time and it doesn't come up with the buyer, it's a non-issue," says Edwards, noting that it also helps sellers who can't or won't fix items to adjust their asking price accordingly.

She adds that it's often cheaper for sellers to make the repairs or replacements on their own ahead of listing than at the negotiation table. At closing, buyer may want to have their own licensed contractor do the necessary work which may be more costly to the seller.

Leslie Piper, consumer housing specialist for Realtor.com, says it could behoove some sellers to consider getting a pest and roof inspection before a home hits the market. "The costs of repairs or the replacement of a roof can vary and could be a big-ticket item a seller may want to be aware of before they choose the price they are hoping to get for their home," says Piper. "Having these inspections can be beneficial for a successful home sale, and also beneficial for a seller's future budgeting plans."

Not every situation will call for an upfront home inspection, say experts. For instance, if the home is very new or located in a competitive real estate market, a pre-sale inspection may be a waste of money. "A lot of times, if there are seven or eight bids on a given house, the home inspection is negotiated out," says Ed Berenbaum, CEO of Century 21 Redwood in Washington, D.C. Even if an inspection is done in a not-so-hot real estate market, it may turn out that the seller will take the house as is, and not require the buyer to make any repairs, he says.

Sellers can often get a reduced price on an inspection or opt for an abbreviated check without a full report through an agent's connections. "Absent a report a home inspector might do it for half the price," says Berenbaum. "Home inspectors get the bulk of their business from real estate agents so they may be willing to do it at reduced rates to foster the relationship."
