Celebrities Taking a Stand Against Domestic Violence

It was shock to many when allegations of Chris Brown and Rihanna having a violent dispute broke out. Pictures flooded the news of the young and hopeful star badly bruised from the beating she had suffered. It was an even greater shock when the singer made a public decision to put her relationship on hold stating that she did not want other women to see her example and go back to their abusive relationships. Hollywood has had many cases of domestic violence. Some spread throughout gossip columns while others remain more on the down low. Not always known for a strong moral compass, many celebrities have faced serious charges when it comes to how they handle their relationships.

One actress has recently stepped out to take a stand against the harmful effects of domestic violence. Reese Witherspoon is widely known for her number of romantic comedy flicks from Sweet Home Alabama to the popular Legally Blond movies. While she may play some ditzy characters in her roles, the actress is anything but dumb; attending Stanford University for an English degree before leaving to pursue her acting career. Witherspoon has demonstrated her intelligence. The actress has recently thrown her support behind a cause she is passionate over; raising awareness about domestic violence. Witherspoon has endorsed efforts on the part of Avon to continue getting the awareness out there through a new necklace that is aimed at raising funds to end violence aimed at women. Not only is she taking her stand against violence to the media, she is making a point back at home; talking with her children about the large prevalence of domestic violence as well as the effects it can cause. An issue near and dear to her heart, she has continued to pioneer with others to put an end to domestic violence once and for all.

One in three women faces domestic abuse, a statistic that can widely overlooked by many. Statistics estimate that a woman is assaulted in the U.S. every 9 seconds. Often times the abuser of a woman is a member of her own family. When these cases happen it is important to have intervention since they can have substantial effects on the mental and physical state of the women as well as the many children that witness abuse. For those children that witness their mothers being abused, the impact can be with them for years. A high majority of women that are enduring abuse never alert the authorities that they are in need of help. It is important for those that are dealing with abuse to not only seek refuge from law enforcement, but to obtain the representation of an attorney to defend their case and defend their rights.
