Snowden: US has been hacking China and Hong Kong since 2009

In an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post (the traffic from which seems to be intermittently breaking their website, so be patient), NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden said he intends to remain in Hong Kong and fight extradition to the US.

In a wide-ranging interview with the SCMP's Lana Lam in an undisclosed location somewhere in the city, Snowden claimed:

• The US National Security Agency (NSA) targeted institutions and individuals in Hong Kong and China using the controversial Prism program


• The hacking of computers in Hong Kong and mainland China by the NSA has been going on since at least 2009


• The NSA has carried out over 61,000 hacking operations globally, including hundreds in China and Hong Kong

"We hack network backbones - like huge internet routers, basically - that give us access to the communications of hundreds of thousands of computers without having to hack every single one," Snowden told the SCMP.

Snowden said he would remain in Hong Kong "until I am asked to leave", indicating that he intends to fight any US extradition request through the Hong Kong courts.
