Woodside World: Audio Production a 'Life-Changing' Class ...

Audio Production: Not a Class for Easy Credits

Woodside High School?s audio production class has shaped the futures and dreams of many of its students.

By Abby Taussig

Once your eyes adjust to the dim lighting in room F14, you see rows and rows of students working on computers. ?The glowing screens light up their concentrated faces. ?Some strum on guitars, others tap on piano keyboards connected to their monitors, and some rap to the music blaring in their headphones. ?This unorthodox classroom is filled with some of the most adroit artists at Woodside.

Geoff Diesel has taught Audio Production for one and a half years; he designed the class two and a half years ago by David Reilly?s request following off the idea that Reilly had for the class four years ago. In the class, students learn how to make songs on a computer using Pro Tools, what Diesel considers ?the most universal software? for recording music. ?The course has led many students to see their futures in making music. ?Santiago Lopez, class of 2012, describes the class as ?life-changing.?

Woodside Plaza Forever Without McWhorter?s

McWhorter?s Stationer?s closed abruptly during the summer of 2011, surprising and upsetting many dedicated customers.

By Cara "CJ" Jack

Near the end of July 2011, McWhorter?s Stationers sold its final product to its final customer. After 30 years of selling local families school supplies, McWhorter?s was asked to leave 282 Woodside Plaza.

It was a shocking surprise when the news of the closing reached the ears of dedicated customers. Many WHS students bought much of their school supplies from McWhorter?s and many since kindergarten.

?It?s a shame that it closed since we all supported [McWhorter?s] for so long. Now we have to go to the big brand name stores in those grimy buildings,? said Woodside High School senior, Lucas Andersen.

A Window to Woodside?s Orchestra

The Woodside High School Orchestra serves as an inspiration and creative outlet for many students.

By Maria Fernanda McCavitt

To Woodside cellist Amber Rizo, class of 2015, ?orchestra means a group of people that play their emotions together,? but what does the word ?orchestra? mean to you?

By definition, orchestra means ?a large group of musicians who play together on various instruments.? To some, orchestra is just a group of people playing stringed instruments together, but to those who participate in it, orchestra means something much more.

When asked why she thought orchestra was so important, Rizo explained, ?before [in the history of music], orchestra was all there was, there were no electric guitars or anything like that. Orchestra helps people remember what music was.? Many students see Rizo?s perspective and recognize orchestra as a window to the music of the past.
